John Culbreth was the son of William Kemp Culbreth and Margaret Morris Pearsall. He is recorded in contemporary sources as a successful farmer with intent to attend NC Agricultural and Mechanical Arts (now known as NCSU) around 1900. In 1904, he married Ellen Ora Carlyle, who died in childbirth in 1907. In 1909, he married Daisy Freuhauff of Jacksonville, Florida, granddaughter ofSpanish emigre Antonio Mayo. 

They had the following following children:

1. William Kemp Culbreth (Dec 14, 1910-Dec 11, 1973) married Beatrice Charles Marshall on August 10, 1935. 

2. Margaret Pearsall Culbreth (May 11, 1913 - Apr 4, 2000) married Harry Barr Chapman in 1948.

3. Theresa Mayo Culbreth (May 11, 1913 - May 20, 1999) married Grady Wise Townsend on Dec 25, 1935.

4. John Thomas Culbreth (Aug 13, 1916 - Aug 10, 1990) married Martha Belle Soles Bryan on Jan 4, 1947.

On January 28, 1919, John Thomas Culbreth was fatally shot by Dallie Sampson in a dispute over cotton seed. Daisy Freuhauff died six years later, November 4, 1925 of cervical cancer. The four orphaned children were sent to their relatives; William Kemp lived with his cousin Newt Culbreath's family in Florida, the twins Margaret and Theresa "Esse", lived with their aunt Annie Gaitley; and the young John Thomas was sent to his aunt Adrian Stubbs.

Adrian Culbreth was the daughter of William Kemp Culbreth and Margaret Morris Pearsall. She married Nicholas Stubbs on April 12, 1903. The family experienced tragedy in December 1905 when their infant son Ralph Pearsall Stubbs died.

As a young woman, Adrian cooked for Hunter's Lodge in Moss Neck, NC. N.C. Stubbs and Adrian later owned the popular destination originally built by Col. F.A. Bond (CSA) which attracted hunters from across the country. Hunter's Lodge even had its own railcar reserved for travelers coming to spend the season there.

Children of Nicholas Stubbs and Adrian Culbreth:

1. Nicholas Carl Stubbs (May 16, 1914 - Dec 5, 1986) married Lois Jeannette Tyner in 1935.

2. Margaret Elizabeth Stubbs (Jun 1, 1918 - Feb 4, 2001) married James Proctor on Aug 2, 1941.

Annie Clayton Culbreth was the daughter of William Kemp Culbreth and Margaret Morris Pearsall. She married Robert Thomas Gaitley on Nov 2, 1920. Called "Aunt Annie", she was the historian of the family.

2) Martha Gaitley (May 5, 1923 - Jan 5, 2015) married James Donahue.

4) Jean Pearsall Gaitley (Oct 22, 1926 - Dec 18, 1997) married James Hunter Mathews on March 30, 1958.

Newton "Newt" Culbreath was the son of John Thomas Culbreath and Mary Peavy. John Thomas Culbreath left North Carolina in 1880 to work in the booming turpentine industry in Georgia. In 1890's the family moved to Wakulla County, Florida.

Newton Culbreth entered the North-South Carolina Business College in 1902. In 1910, and with business partner George Russ established the Wakulla Turpentine Company. He had purchased his first tract of timber only six years prior. By the time of his death, he was the largest private land-owner in Wakulla County with a holding of 12,000 acres. A motto attributed to him: "All Things Cometh to He Who Waiteth, if He Worketh like Hell while He Waiteth."

Newt married Ida Mae Russ on Nov 15, 1912. The couple had three children:

1) Edwin Thomas Culbreath (Feb 16, 1915 - Jun 7, 1995) married Winifred Register.

2) Ava Elizabeth Culbreath (Dec 27, 1919 - Dec 18, 2006) married Clarence D. Williams.

3) Betty Culbreath (April 12, 1929 - Jan 15, 1983) married first Don Gregory, then Joseph H. Walker, Jr.

Annie James Culbreth was the daughter of Joseph Warren Culbreth and Elizabeth Young McNeill. Her father died when she and her sister, Nettie Culbreth, were still very young. Consequently, the girls and their widowed mother spent years fighting for the estate. They also traveled frequently as evidenced by her scrapbook, in the possession of her granddaughter Anne Cotton.

She married Rev. Moses Eli Cotton on June 26, 1912. They had the following children:

1) Horace Peabody Cotton (Sept 3, 1913 - Apr 1982) who married Magdayln Davis.

2) Russell Culbreth Cotton (Mar 16, 1915 - Oct 16, 1974) who married Mary Lee Edwards.

3) Doyel Lakin Cotton (Nov 11, 1920 - Oct 1, 1998) who married Mary Ella Bullock.

4) Boyce Young Cotton (Aug 19, 1923 - Nov 1974) who married Barbara Shellsmith.

5) Elizabeth Cotton (May 18, 1925 - May 12, 2008) who married William Jefferies.

6) Guyte McCord Cotton (July 2, 1930 - Dec 26, 2002) who married Winnie Williams.

Nettie Culbreth was the daughter of Joseph Warren Culbreth and Elizabeth Young McNeill. Her father died when she was a young girl. Nettie, her sister Annie James Culbreth, and their mother, spent many years traveling and visiting relatives, as evidenced in her sister's scrapbook. Nettie frequently visited her cousin Newt Culbreath in Florida where she had many friends. 

Around 1912, she married William Hewlett Johnstone and moved to Toccopola, Mississippi. 

Their children were:

1) Kenneth Culbreth Johnstone (November 24, 1912 - December 7, 1992) married Mary Elizabeth Wicker.

2) William E Johnstone (November 22, 1914 - September 1984) married Virginia Leavell.

3) Charles Phillip Johnstone (May 4, 1921 - Living) married Rachel Weed.

4) Elizabeth Young Johnstone (October 16, 1924 - January 17, 2004) married Robert Stanley Loonan.

Annie Elizabeth Campbell is the daughter of Lucy Culbreth and H.C. Campbell. She was born in Marlboro County, South Carolina. Annie Campbell married Clarence Lee Traywick in 1921. She died in Fayetteville, North Carolina. 

Children: 

1) Henry Clarence Traywick (April 22, 1920 - August 17, 1977) married Delia Donaldson

2) Robert Thomas Traywick (July 10, 1921 - June 23, 1983) 

3) Francis Elizabeth Traywick (September 15, 1924 - March 20, 2012) married Russell O'Brien.

4) Elizabeth Ann Traywick (dates unknown) married Kenneth Smith.

Ruth Culbreth Campbell is the daughter of Lucy Culbreth and H.C. Campbell. She was born in Marlboro County, SC. She married George Williams, Sr. She died in Fayetteville, NC.

They had the following children:

1) William Henry Williams (abt 1924) married Elizabeth Maxwell.

2) George Edward Williams (August 3, 1924 - August 30, 1939)

3) John Harold Williams (1927 - April 20, 1958)

4) Rosa Lucille Williams (1930) married Vernon Spruill.

William Thomas Culbreth, Sr. was the son of Malcolm Nathaniel Culbreth and Katie Duncan. He was born in the Moss Neck community. He served in World War I and married Inez Lewis. 

Children:

1) William Thomas Culbreth, Jr (December 27, 1919 - October 19, 1970) married Elizabeth Beeson Falls. 

Herbert Duncan Culbreth is the son of Malcolm Nathaniel Culbreth and Katie Duncan. He was born in the Moss Neck community. He married Roberta "Bertie" Martin and for a time lived in Selma, North Carolina, before returning to live in Moss Neck.

Joseph "Worth" Culbreth was the son of Malcolm Nathaniel Culbreth and Katie Duncan. He lived in the Moss Neck Community. He served in World War I. Worth married Flora Hasty on April 25, 1925.

Their children were:

1) John Charles Culbreth (May 25, 1926 - August 14, 2007) married Anne Caldwell Baker.

2) Joseph Worth Culbreth, Jr (July 4, 1935 - December 2, 1984) married Sylvia Haskell.
